Part 3: The Industry Impediments
line

Outside of the corporate organization, there are many additional underlying factors restricting change as well.

Multiple independent professions have traditionally performed the many tasks needed to carry out a facilities project; each group highly fragmented itself and each facing different competitive and structural challenges. Brokers, designers, and several additional vendors each have their own specialized training, expertise and experience. And they each have vastly different economic interests, business models and margins. A company hiring a group of these service providers often ends up spending as much time managing the vendors and refereeing their conflicts as it spends evaluating its own facility options and making an informed decision.

Additionally, there has been little or no advancement in thinking or practice by these service providers to improve upon this situation. Too many firms have a vested interest in the status quo, or they lack the resources or ability to carry out meaningful change.
